On 4/14/21, I attended a Lunch N Learn with Kevin Marion, who is a artist and a architect. He believes that Art and Architecture are synonymous with each other because of architecture being a form of expression that creates a physical structure. He lives and works in Mocksville NC. He told us that architecture is more than buildings, it is also what is inside the building such as air conditioning, plumbing, and electricity, so a lot of planning is needed. I originally thought that all of that stuff was handled by other people. We were then shown sketches that were used to set up the foundation of a building and the systems that would be inside a building. The systems inside a building resemble internal systems that would be seen inside the human body. Architects don't build the buildings themselves, they only design the building and draw out where the systems should go. 3D modeling software like AutoCAD and SketchUp is used to show what the interior and exterior of a building looks like. In order to become an architect, you need to have creativity, artistic skill and innovation so the buildings you make look good and are safe to the owners and everyone else. I asked Kevin how he gets his ideas for his art he puts on his projects, and he replied that he only builds models for fun and that his art doesn't have a lot of depth to it.
On 3/26/21 I attended a virtual Lunch N Learn with Forrest Breedlove, who owns Highest Peak Media and graduated from Davie High in 1999. He worked in multiple different careers, including being a photographer, cinematographer, filmmaker, and post-producer. Due to technical difficulties, we had to wait 13 minutes out of the hour we had in the Lunch N Learn, but I still learned a lot and found some things that I agree with. He started off by saying that he had no idea that he would be doing any of the careers listed above and that he majored in math because he wanted to be a CNC programmer. Forrest then found his next job in writing due to his passion about the outdoors, where he spent time with his family farming and hunting. He would work with several companies and wrote articles about outdoor equipment like boots, archery, and camping equipment, all while traveling the country in his truck and taking pictures. He got hit hard by the 2008 recession and he lost his job, but he saw this loss as a chance to change his life and career to what he wanted it to be instead of taking on a victim mentality and not doing anything. I feel like way too many people have this victim mentality where nothing is ever their fault, which is harmful not only towards society but to themselves because they won't be able to see their mistakes and learn from them. Forrest would also become a host of a TV show focused on hunting and a photographer for on-site events. COVID-19 came by and screwed him over again. Now he is going through another window of change due to his desires and passion changing. He said that he didn't make the right choices of 100% of the time and that life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% how you react to it, which was the same idea that my parents used to raise me. Making good connections with others and forming friendships as well as having a personality and a good work ethic will also help you in life.
On 3/3/21, I attended a virtual Lunch N Learn about a traveling nurse named Emily Carpenter who was at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse NY when COVID-19 hit. She was 21 years old when she became a Nurse via a 4 year bachelor program. To become a travelling nurse, you must fill out a application/contract in order to work in other states. If you have a permanent address in one of those states, you don't need to fill out an application at all. Most contracts are 12-13 weeks, can stay in the same area for 1 year before you need to go elsewhere. There are different kinds of travelling nurses such as Travel ICU Nurses and Travel ER Nurses and they get paid more than normal nurses. She took Chemistry, Statistics, Microbiology, Anatomy. She also went to a liberal arts college where she had to take 2 years of prerequisites and 2 years of nursing courses before she could get her Associates Degree and become a licensed nurse. Teamwork and communication are also important, as you need to react to situations quickly and appropriately. She then talked about COVID-19, and the situations she said hospitals were in were worse than I was expecting. She said that the situations she was in was a nurse's worst nightmare made into a reality. She said that the hospitals were full, not just a COVID-19 block being full, THE ENTIRE HOSPITAL. Every floor was made into a COVID-19 floor and ambulances had to be turned away. All ICU's (Intensive Care Units) were focused on COVID-19, so patients with other wounds couldn't be treated. I couldn't even think about what she had to go through when I get squeamish just thinking about organs and imagining them in action, getting ruptured, etc.
On 2/24/21, I attended a virtual Lunch N Learn with UTI UTI has Automotive, NASCAR, and Welding classes in NC. Their courses include Automotive, NASCAR, Welding, Collision repair, Diesel, CNC machinist, motorcycle and power sports, and marine. Also teaches the skills needed to fix cars from the 1980's. All of them are hands on and no Liberal Arts degree are needed. 35+ companies partner with UTI because of mechanics, so joining gets you a head start in the automotive industry. UTI is focused on making you a technician as a full time job. Doing this school for a hobby is a bit overkill. They accept students based off of willpower, not by GPA or SAT scores. I like that they are doing this because being a mechanic is more about willpower. If you disagree, then ask yourself when was the last time you saw a nerd under the hood?

On 2/24/20, I went to room 5609 at Davie County High School to learn about electronics and circuits, I went to a merit badge college to learn about electricity and circuits, so some of this I think I know. The person in charge of the Lunch N Learn was someone named Max Smith, who works as a electrician in our school. He talked about some tools he uses such as the Wire Stripper, Screwdriver, and Mutes to block the current of exposed wires. He also taught us the technique of righty-Tighty and Lefty-Loosey before letting us do a wiring activity, which took up most of the class. I learned that the more watts that are used, more energy is needed. To me, it looked really simple. I'd imagine that the difficult part is getting it all to work together flawlessly, because I did something similar in a merit badge college where I had to wire a tiny speaker to a circuit board and get the speaker to make a specific noise. When I was finished, there was a slight error, but when I tried to correct this error, everything got worse and worse, even to the point where I wasn't getting any noise at all!
On 2/18/20, I went to room 5347 to learn about a teaching career and working with kids in general. We mostly just talked about a class you can take in school to get experience, which takes place during 2nd period. To join the program/class, you must have a 3.0 GPA, be a 11th or 12th grader, and be recommended by 3+ instructors, you also need to write an essay about why you want to join the class. Time in this class is mostly off campus with a hands on experience of teaching and schooling K-8 graders and Soaring Eagles. I personally didn't care much about teaching, but I'm glad our school has an option for those who want to be teachers.
On February 21, 2019, I went to room 5527 to attend a Lunch N Learn about what life is like for the homeless. There are a lot of homeless families around the U.S., especially since that there is at least one homeless child in every school. Services are provided to help these people like shelter and food being provided. There was also a simulation showed to us called playspent.org, which simulates what a homeless person could be going through. The whole classes participated and we ended up winning. I know that First Baptist Church offers to provide shelter for the homeless and gets people to volunteer by cooking their own food and bringing it.
